Farming Block in Waldorf Grade 03

Farming Block in Waldorf Grade 03

In Waldorf Grade 3, the Farming block is an essential part of the curriculum, reflecting the developmental stage where students begin to feel a stronger connection to the physical world and the practical aspects of life.

This block is designed to give students hands-on experiences with farming, gardening and understanding the cycles of nature.

The Farming block in Grade 3 ties into the larger Waldorf theme of practical learning, allowing children to experience the rhythms of nature and the practical skills needed to live in harmony with mother Earth.

This also fosters a sense of responsibility toward nature, food and the effort of our farmers in producing food and develops appreciation & gratitude.

Anandhi Teacher (our Grade 03 Class Teacher) says:
In the farming block, the children actively participated by collecting dry leaves, wood twigs and small logs to create natural compost and fertilizer.

They also dug a pit to place all the fruit peels they had collected during fruit breaks since the beginning of the year and prepared their own compost.

Thanks to Akshayakalpa - an Indian organic dairy enterprise, for collaborating with us & teaching organic ways of farming to our children, teachers & support staff.

Their team has been a great help with the farming activities being conducted.

To further support this, soil preparation was done on our farming land with the children by clearing all the weeds. We selected two patches of 25ft x 4ft and raised the bed level up to 20 cm from the ground level with natural fencing.

We planted seeds like bush beans, bindi / ladies' fingers, coriander seeds and palak. These are all growing well. We are eagerly looking for the plants to get us yields.

To see the seeds sown by them sprouting & growing into plants in front of their eyes is a great experience for these young children. This entire process is filled with excitement & thrill and a great learning experience for children.

Farming block is incomplete without the stories and lessons about traditional farming methods, the history of agriculture and how humans have depended on the land throughout history.

Integration of festivals or celebrations related to the harvest season, bringing a cultural and spiritual dimension would enrich the overall experience of children.
