The significance of Teachers' blackboard drawings in a Waldorf school

Image
The colourful, detailed blackboard drawings in the classrooms provide visual context for the current block / lessons or the ongoing preparations for school events or festivals.  Whether illustrating a historical event, a scene from a story, or a relevant geometric or any other form helps students better understand the significance of the lesson or the event. A blackboard drawing might blend elements of mythology, history, nature, geometry, literacy or numeracy etc., while reflecting the holistic approach of the curriculum.  Pl note, in Waldorf education subjects are interconnected, hence these blackboard drawings enable the students to see the connections between different areas of learning. In general, the Waldorf teachers' artworks are very simple & heartening. The end goal of these blackboard drawings is to inspire creativity and imagination among students.  It sets a tone of beauty and reverence for the subject matter and encourages students to see learning as an ...

Farming Block in Waldorf Grade 03 In Waldorf Grade 3, the Farming block is an essential part of the curriculum, reflecting the developmental stage where students begin to feel a stronger connection to the physical world and the practical aspects of life. This block is designed to give students hands-on experiences with farming, gardening and understanding the cycles of nature. The Farming block in Grade 3 ties into the larger Waldorf theme of practical learning, allowing children to experience the rhythms of nature and the practical skills needed to live in harmony with mother Earth. This also fosters a sense of responsibility toward nature, food and the effort of our farmers in producing food and develops appreciation & gratitude. Geometry block in Waldorf Grade 06 !! In Waldorf Grade 6, the geometry block deepens students' understanding of shapes, forms, and spatial relationships, building on the foundation laid in earlier grades. The curriculum moves from freehand geometric drawing to more precise and mathematical constructions, using tools like compasses, rulers, and protractors. ---------------- Students in geometry block learn to construct basic geometric shapes such as circles, triangles, squares, and hexagons using compasses and rulers. They explore the relationships between different shapes, focusing on symmetry, balance, and proportion. Bashpika Teacher (current Grade 06 class teacher) says: We began by discussing the origins of geometry and how ancient civilizations might have used tools like ropes and shadows to measure and create geometric shapes such as circles, triangles, right angles etc. The children were fascinated to see perfect circles, something they had difficulty drawing freehand in fif...

The scenic route, which wound along the Cauvery Pipeline road was a testament to their endurance and determination. A refreshing pause by the gentle stream proved to be a revitalizing oasis, rejuvenating their spirits and propelling them forward to complete the run with unwavering enthusiasm. As they crossed the finish line, their beaming faces reflected a sense of pride and accomplishment, a true testament to the power of teamwork and perseverance. As Grade 5 children are being trained for the inter-school championship (Grade 5 Olympics) to be held this year, this 3km run was planned and executed.

Dear Parents & Teachers ,   On this special occasion of Teacher’s Day, I want to take a moment to celebrate you all, not just as learners of parenting or teaching but as future teachers and torchbearers of the Waldorf tradition. Over the past years, I have watched you engage deeply with the principles of Steiner education, approaching each concept with openness, curiosity, and a desire to understand education of children in the light of spiritual science , in its truest sense: as a journey that nurtures the whole being—body, soul, and spirit.   Being a Waldorf teacher is a calling like no other. No different is it being a Waldorf parent. It asks for more than just an academic understanding of subjects or a tick-box type of parenting; it requires us to see the child as a spiritual being and to embrace our own inner development. In our PTMs, we haven’t merely been discussing parenting techniques or curriculum models. We’ve been walking together on a path of self-awareness, d...
